MDaemon Email Server is quick and easy to install, requires less maintenance than the average email server (including automatic software updates) and offers several mobile device management options, includes licensed features for antivirus, Outlook client, and mobile connectivity via ActiveSync, and the flexibility of remote administration to make email management simple. The mail server offers the flexibility of IMAP, POP, SMTP, and DomainPOP services and does not require a Server Operating System. Delivers Mail Directly to Recipients’ Mail Server or to Your Smart Host. It also features an Intuitive, tasked-based GUI, easy account database integration (via Active Directory, LDAP, ODBC, or MDaemon’s Minger verification), multiple domain support, and simple back-up and restore (via flat file structure) for rapid failure recovery.

The MDaemon Email Server stores messages and groupware collaboration data on the email server, thus centralizing all business content. MDaemon Webmail, MDaemon Connector for Outlook, and MDaemon ActiveSync allows you to share Email, Folders (including sub-folders), Calendars with free / busy scheduling, Contacts, Distribution Lists, Tasks, Notes, and Documents between users and devices.

MDaemon’s clustering service enables administrators to set up multiple MDaemon servers in an Active/Active cluster. MDaemon synchronizes all configurations between servers, allowing multiple servers to service user accounts at the same time.

Create and manage bulletins, discussions, and distribution lists easily to effectively communicate on multiple levels. Custom scheduling and mail queuing allow for more flexible outbound mail management. Mailing List membership can be stored within MDaemon or in an ODBC compliant database.

Mailing Lists features include: Mailing List Subscription Reminders, Option to Replace FROM Header with List’s Email Address, List-ID Support, Support for List-Post, List-Subscribe, List-Unsubscribe, List-Help, List-Owner, List-Archive Mailing List Headers, and Remove Duplicate Recipients when Message Sent to Multiple Mailing Lists.

Attachments can be added to Calendar items, Contacts, Tasks, and Notes via MDaemon Webmail, MDaemon Connector for Outlook, or your favorite CalDAV or CardDAV client. When scheduling a meeting, attachments added to calendar events will be sent to all meeting attendees.

MDaemon’s Attachment Linking removes attachments from inbound / outbound email messages and stores them locally on the server. In place of the actual attachment, the mail server will insert a URL which the user can click on to retrieve the attachment(s) as needed. Storing the attachments on the server instead of attaching them to inbound / outbound messages lowers the amount of bandwith that is needed because less data is being transmitted, valuable disk space is freed on client machines and mobile devices, and there is no longer a need to worry about attachment file size restrictions. Inbound and outbound message attachments can be automatically compressed or extracted to save space and bandwidth.

On-Demand Mail Relay (ODMR) allows users to connect to an ISP or other external gateway or host via an authenticated session to retrieve mail. This is a preferred method of message retrieval when using a dynamic IP address.

When Smart Message Routing is enabled MDaemon will maintain single copies of messages destined for multiple recipients and use multiple RCPT commands to deliver the message whenever possible, thus saving on your disk space and bandwidth.

Administrators can restrict files uploaded to the Documents folder by size and type. These settings can be applied for specific domains or system-wide.

Domain Manager allows you to configure multiple mail domains. You can add, rename or remove domains via the Domain Manager. Each domain can be configured with its own host name, IP address, smart host, and domain signature. Account and mail pruning options and message size restriction can also be configured separately for each domain.

Domain Sharing allows multiple MDaemon Email Servers to use the same domain name and forward mail between these servers if an incoming message is addressed to a user that exists on one of the other servers. MDaemon will query the other servers listed in the Domain Sharing settings (using the Minger protocol) to verify the recipient’s address is a valid user on one of those servers. Once the message is accepted, it is then sent to the correct server via SMTP.

This feature is used to automatically create a Domain Gateway for a previously unknown domain when another source attempts to deliver that domain’s messages to MDaemon, and a DNS query lists MDaemon’s location as a valid MX record. This feature effectively enables you to become a backup server for another domain by simply configuring the DNS system to use your IP as an alternate MX host.

Accounts can be easily imported or exported using a comma-delimited file.

Account restrictions allow administrators to prevent specific accounts from receiving mail from outside domains and/or sending mail to outside domains. Restricted messages can be refused, returned to the sender, sent to the postmaster, or sent to any other email address.

Public Folders are managed via the Public Folder Manager. Folders are arranged by domain in a hierarchical menu. Custom access rights can be delegated on a per-user basis.

MDaemon allows public folders to be configured with message ticketing using any client with access to public folders. When this is enabled for a public folder, MDaemon will add the public folder name and a unique identifier to the subject of messages sent to the submission address of the public folder. This feature can be used with all clients that have public folder access. Outbound messages having this specially formatted subject will have the “From” address changed to the submission address of the public folder and a copy of the outbound message will be placed into a child public folder named “Replied To”. In addition, any inbound messages with this specially formatted subject will be automatically redirected to the public folder, regardless of the address the message was sent to.

With account quotas, you can specify the account’s maximum number of allowable messages and the maximum amount of disk space that the account can consume. If a mail delivery to the account is attempted which would exceed the maximum messages limit or the maximum disk space allocated, MDaemon can notify the sender that the recipient mailbox has reached its quota.

MDaemon can monitor Active Directory for account data. All of MDaemon’s access to Active Directory is one way – from Active Directory to MDaemon. MDaemon in no way alters the schema files. MDaemon’s Account Manager monitors Active Directory, automatically mirroring additions and changes. MDaemon also provides options for handling deleted accounts and keeping all public contact records updated with the most recent information stored in Active Directory.

Backup and recovery of your MDaemon data is quick and easy. Other mail servers require advanced setup or third-party applications for backup and recovery, but with MDaemon, you can backup your configuration files, mail, public folders, and other settings using simple drag-and-drop.

Virtualized applications can serve as on-demand cloud-based services that can be run locally or via a hosted, third-party provider. By fully supporting all Windows virtualization platforms, including VMWare, Amazon EC2, and others to support the advancement in virtualization technology, MDaemon administrators can obtain greater scalability and flexibility for their customers and businesses.

Custom mail queues can be created, and custom mail processing schedules can be assigned to the queues. You can use content filter rules to route messages that meet specific criteria to your custom queues.

MDaemon’s queue management system allows administrators to view their mail queues directly in the MDaemon interface. Buttons and right-click contextual menus allow administrators to freeze, un-freeze, and process the queues.

The Holding Queue can be used to receive messages that cause software exceptions during AntiVirus, AntiSpam, or Content Filter processing. If a software error occurs when processing a message, it will be moved into the holding queue and not delivered. Custom notification settings allow you to send a Holding Queue Summary report to the administrator or any other email address at regular intervals.

To help prevent message delivery delays caused by messages accumulating in the Inbound queue, MDaemon now has a dedicated queue for deferred messages. Messages that are placed in the Deferred queue will have the date they are scheduled to leave the queue encoded in their file names.

MDaemon’s pruning settings can be configured to automatically delete accounts that have been inactive for a designated period of time, or to delete messages older than a specified number of days.

With complex IMAP filters, administrators can set multiple filtering parameters based on the message size or the contents of any message header, and perform actions such as moving, deleting, forwarding, or redirecting the message.

The goal of MDaemon’s IMAP COMPRESS feature is to reduce the bandwidth usage of IMAP. For low bandwidth connections, this can improve performance when retrieving data from large folders. The IMAP COMPRESS extension compresses all data sent to and from the client. This helps reduce the bandwidth used by IMAP. This does require extra memory and CPU usage per IMAP session. The IMAP response from new mail check compresses up to 90%. Message headers and bodies compress between 50-70% and text with repeated patterns compress better than random text. Compression rates will vary by environment and can be disabled.

The mail routing information that is displayed via the tabs at the bottom of the MDaemon interface is displayed in Colorized Session Logs. This allows protocol commands and errors to stand out for easier review and troubleshooting.

The Accounts menu includes a Groups and Templates menu. Templates are used to control the services and features that are available to accounts belonging to groups that are assigned the selected template. Thus, groups can be used to assign most of an account’s settings automatically. For example, if you want to assign an auto-responder to a certain set of accounts, you can create and name an account template which defines the auto-responder, then assign that account template to a group, and then finally assign one or more of your accounts to the group. From that point, the template will determine the account’s auto-responder settings. Templates can control almost all or just select portions of an account’s settings. You can decide what portions of an account’s settings are to be part of a template.

Signature files allow administrators to add a block of text to the end of all messages sent by specific users, or by all users of a specific domain. Domain signatures can include plain-text or HTML. Email signatures also support macros which can be used to insert the sender’s contact information and other details into the signature of an email message. Macros allow default and domain signatures to be personalized with the sender’s full name, email address, business phone, home phone, business or home address, nickname, title, and much more

Performance Counters allow monitoring software to track MDaemon’s status in real time. There are counters for the number of active sessions for the various protocols, number of messages in the queues, server active / inactive states, MDaemon up time, and session and message statistics.

Bandwidth Throttling allows you to limit the amount of bandwidth used by sessions based on the protocol used – POP3, IMAP, SMTP, DomainPOP, or MultiPOP. You can set different rates for each of MDaemon’s major services on a per-domain basis, and you can also set limits on local connections.

IPv6 is the next generation IP address standard. It was created to address the decreasing availability of IPv4 addresses as more internet-connected devices enter the market. MDaemon fully supports IPv6. Some benefits of IPv6 include more efficient routing, simplified network configuration, and additional security. IPv6 addresses can be specified for each domain.

Message Recall provides users with a grace period during which outbound messages sent by authenticated users are held in the inbound mail queue for a designated period of time. If a message recall request is received during this period, the message is simply removed from the inbound queue as if it had never been sent.

CalDAV allows users to view and update all calendars to which they have access on all compatible CalDAV clients. Notable CalDAV clients include Apple iCal (Included with Mac OS X), Apple iOS (iPhone/iPad), and Mozilla Thunderbird via the Lightning calendar plugin.

Users can synchronize their contacts with their favorite mobile device or other mail client using the CardDAV protocol. Notable CardDAV clients are Apple Address Book (included with Mac OS X), Apple iOS (iPhone), and Mozilla Thunderbird via the SOGO plugin.

The Do Not Disturb feature allows administrators to set a timeframe during which users are not allowed to access their accounts to check their email. During the Do Not Disturb period, accounts can still receive email, but users cannot send or check for mail using SMTP, IMAP, POP, MDaemon Webmail or MDaemon ActiveSync.

An ActiveSync migration app is available along with MDaemon’s original MDMigrator, which allows administrators to migrate data from Microsoft Exchange Server. The ActiveSync Migration Client for MDaemon provides improved migration support for administrators by easily migrating email, calendars, tasks, notes, and contacts from any mail server that supports ActiveSync protocol version 14.1.

MDaemon Connector for Outlook client settings such as host names, SSL and port settings, Add-Ins, and other preferences can now be stored centrally in MDaemon and pushed out to clients. When a new MDaemon Connector for Outlook profile is created, only the username and password are needed. All other settings are retrieved from MDaemon with the click of a button.

MDaemon administrators can configure default and per-domain email signatures that are personalized for each user and pushed to supported email clients (MDaemon Webmail and MDaemon Connector for Outlook).

MDaemon’s XML API allows third-party developers to integrate complimentary applications (such as CPanel, etc.) with MDaemon. The API allows for the retrieval of information from MDaemon, including lists, accounts, domains, and more, and also provides the ability to make configuration changes. Folders and their contents can be created, deleted, renamed, and moved allowing developers to display or manipulate the content of user mailboxes. When disk space falls below a user-defined threshold, MDaemon can automatically send a warning message to the postmaster, or to any other email address.
